$34 billion

$45 billion

1.8 billion

711 million

These big numbers are just some of the indicators on how the gaming industry has grown and continued to advance.  NewZoo projected that revenue from PC gaming will be $34 billion for 2015. A survey from Entertainment Software Association estimated that the PC is the top device of choice for 62% gamers.  And mobile gaming, on phones and tablets, is growing to an estimated of $45 billion for 2018. There are 1.8 billion gamers worldwide with 711 million active gamers – that is 1/10th of the planet!

Gaming has come a long way, becoming more mainstream and more diverse than ever before. Computing has been at the heart of this impressive growth. Throughout the history of gaming, Intel has been a key contributor, working with our hardware and software developers to enable the best gaming experience possible.

With the ground-breaking computing performance and new, immersive technologies coming to market now, we are on the cusp to leap-froging into another era of exponential growth.    What are the new opportunities for developers?  How can Intel help them get the most out of this growth?  With the theme of "Developed By You" this year for Intel Developer Forum (IDF), Intel's software business lead, Doug Fisher and I were joined by leaders in the gaming industry to discuss the huge opportunities gaming presents to developers.

Gamers have been setting the highest standard for us as an industry, pushing us to offer ever better performance and graphics continuously for the best gaming experience possible.   You will see major breakthroughs in computing performance this year.   For example, we launched the 5th Gen Intel® Core™ Processors with Intel® Iris™ Pro Graphics 6200 at Computex this year, offering a whopping 2X improvements in 3Dgraphics, with up to 35% faster video conversion and up to 20% better CPU performance.

To show how important performance is to gamers, renowned overclocker and owner of XtremeSystems, Charles Wirth joined us on stage to demonstrate the extent of performance you can get from a desktop PC based on the Intel® Core™ Desktop Processors i7-6700K, desktop processor from the 6th Gen Intel® CoreTM processor family.  We recently introduced the 6th Gen Intel® CoreTM processor for desktop at Gamescom, the first unlocked processor for gamers, enthusiasts and overclockers which received overwhelming excitement from media and gamers.   Charles set a new world record for overclocking a 6th Generation Intel Core processor using liquid nitrogen!

Another technology that can potentially revolutionize gaming is the latest development in memory.  The 3D XPointTM technology, a new category of non-volatile memory will enable fast access to large sets of data for the processor.  This is especially important for gaming's high demand for graphics data.  Chris Roberts, CEO of Cloud Imperium Games and creator of titles including Wing Commander and the 2016 release of Star Citizen explained how the most advanced processor and nonvolatile memory will deliver the ultimate gaming experience. Intel® Optane technology will combine the revolutionary 3D XPoint technology with Intel's advanced system memory controller, interface hardware and software IP in a range of high-endurance Intel SSD products beginning in 2016.

Our latest innovation will use sight, sound and touch to create an immersive experience for gaming, revolutionize how gaming will look and feel in the near future.  This is our vision for the Intel RealSense technology, which we announced a number of updates at IDF, including new OS support, collaboration with Google's Project Tango and new hardware and software applications.  Follow this space closely as this is just the start of Intel RealSense taking off.

Other industries, such as toys and motorsports, are riding on the technology breakthroughs that the gaming industry initiates.   Dave Kaemmer, CEO of iRacing, talked about how racing games are now so realistic that drivers can use it for simulation, training and test track driving.  That speaks volumes for the realism of the experiences created through computing.  David Gram, Marketing Director for LEGO Future Lab also shared that embracing the latest technologies in gaming will enhance the experience of their consumers.

We covered much more ground at the session.  Read my co-host Doug Fisher's blog here on the session.  And visit the www.intel.com/newsroom/idf website if you would like to watch the replay of our session.

We are only scratching the surface on the potential of gaming and the influence it has on other industries.  With future innovation in mobility, Internet of things and virtual reality, there are tremendous opportunities for the hardware developer, software developer or gamer. At Intel we are striving for the BEST performance across ALL devices and with the BEST user experience across all operating systems. I'm excited about what you will develop!

Share this link with them to sign up.   Good morning!  Millions of Americans with a common and potentially life-threatening form of liver disease will soon have access to the first-ever treatment for the condition.    In a landmark decision on Thursday, the Food and Drug Administration approved Madrigal Pharmaceuticals ' drug " Rezdiffra ," to be used along with diet and exercise. The company expects the medicine to be available next month with a hefty price tag of $47,400 per year before insurance and other rebates.    So, why is this approval so important?    First of all, people suffering from the disease badly need a treatment. Rezdiffra is specifically approved to treat patients with nonalcoholic steatoh

J&J, Merck and Bristol Myers Squibb are in the hot seat

This is Annika Kim Constantino, and I cover the biotech and pharmaceutical industry for CNBC.com .    Three names in the industry – Johnson & Johnson, Merck and Bristol Myers Squibb – face a pivotal few weeks ahead.    CEOs from those companies are slated to testify at a Senate hearing on high prescription drug prices in the U.S. on Feb. 8 at 10 a.m. ET, Sen. Bernie Sanders announced Friday.   It took subpoena threats from the senator, but J&J CEO Joaquin Duato and Merck CEO Robert Davis have agreed to testify after both executives declined earlier requests to appear at the Senate HELP committee's hearing. They join Bristol Myers Squibb CEO Chris Boerner, who agr

How competitive can Roche be in the weight loss drug market?

VIEW IN BROWSER | SUBSCRIBE TUE, SEP 17, 2024 EDITOR'S NOTE     Think a friend or colleague should be getting this newsletter? Share this link with them to sign up. Good afternoon!  Roche is one of several drugmakers hoping to join the booming weight loss drug market, which Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly are currently dominating. But can the Swiss company develop drugs that can compete with that duopoly?  The answer isn't clear yet.  We need to see more data from longer and larger clinical trials, which will likely take years for Roche to conduct.  But the company last week presented more early-stage data more early-stage data on its experimental obesity injection and pill, which some analysts said raised concerns about how competitive those products can be if they enter the space. Some analysts said the new results showed that both drugs – which Roche acquired through its nearly $3 billion acquisition of Carmot Therapeutics in December – caused a higher rate of side
